THE BRIEF
To enable a London museum to reach new audiences in innovative ways and go beyond the walls of its iconic building
DEEP DIVE
Dimension X: Dinosaurs is a new type of mixed reality experience designed to explore how the Natural History Museum can engage audiences beyond its own buildings. Launched in the Metrocentre shopping centre in Gateshead, it is part of a collaboration project funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).
The user experience:
Dimension X: Dinosaurs gave Metrocentre’s visitors the chance to collect palaeontological evidence to return ghost dinosaurs to their own dimension. Using Magic Leap headset technology to superimpose computer-generated graphics onto a specially curated space, teams of players were called up to Dimension X, an otherwordly realm, where they used ghost tracking equipment to contain onsite paranormal activity.
Developed by a leading consortium of partners including the Natural History Museum, Sky, Magic Leap, and Intu Shopping Centre, the experience had just launched in the Metrocentre in Gateshead when the COVID-19 lockdown was announced.
